23 Things

When I think back to the beginning of this journey, I think I have learned a lot about the techno world. Several months ago it was a struggle just to create a blog and now I can access it easily. Doing 23 things has opened my mind to what the endless possiblilities are for communication. Some new vocabulary has been added to my repertoire in that for some of things I have looked at now I have some simple frame of reference. Remembering what I have done is another thing though. Without using these "things" on a regular basis, I will probably forget a good deal of it. So, in short, this has built in mind expansion and awareness. And... I have enjoyed doing it as it has been a challenge!

Farecast

I chose to explore Farecast which predicts the way the prices will go on airline tickets - up, down, or stay the same. When I tested out a Canadian flight I found that Edmonton was not listed. I could choose to "vote" to put Edmonton on the list. Some Canadian cities on the list were Vancouver, Toronto, and wouldn't you know it, Calgary! This site would be useful for travel agents, maybe occasionally at the reference desk of a public library.

Zoho

I arrived on Zoho and created an account and now I have icons on my desktop that I'm not sure I will ever use. I am told that Zoho is like a universal word processor (will accept all formats).

Library 2.0

I have only just begun to grapple with the fact that the library, as I have known it for my lifetime and for a 36 year career (in school libraries), is changing. My best guess as to what Library 2.0 is about is that it equates to continual change or evolution. What we will end up with, who knows. We seem to be chasing after every new technological invention. It is mind boggling to say the least. The notion that we should be in touch with the whole world through blogging is difficult. As with every new idea that comes along, there is a marketer out there just waiting to make a fast buck. It seems funny that in this day and age of more communication tools it is becoming more difficult to talk to a real person without playing tag (oops! Tag has many meanings now). I just hope that technology doesn't dehumanize society for future generations. Oh, the angst that change brings!

Del.icio.us

I don't think I will make use of this. I do not socialize on the internet.

Library Thing

This looks like something I could use and perhaps tell my book club members about. I entered eight books that I have bought as Christmas gifts. This may be a good way of tracking books that I have given and good suggestions for future giving.

Image Chef

ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more

News Readers

Explored Syndic8.com for a few minutes. Checked News and saw something about Nintendo Wii so went there to see if I could get an idea for a game for Ali and Kayden. There must be an easier way to get my Christmas shopping done!

Bloglines

Exploring bloglines was interesting and I think useful to me. Can I do this at home or do I need to buy something to make it possible? It was free here.

Family Mosaic

I have just gone through Flickr and feel a little overwhelmed, perhaps because I have been away from 23 Things for a month and now the pressure is on to get back at it. I found the Montage feature kind of interesting and wonder whether photos from a family reunion could be made into a mosaic and family members could be a group. A possibility? If so, how could it be made easy? Anne

Vader on Blog!! That will be something to see!! This will be more fun when it becomes easier. A learning curve for me. Good thing I have AWD Subaru to pull me through.

Wikis???

I haven't used Wikis much but was pleased a few days ago when I found the list of Redwall books in Wikipedia more easily than on Brian Jacques website. How can a library use it? Not totally sure, but perhaps Book Club members could post comments about books they have read. It would be interesting to see what everyone likes to read and how they have enjoyed books that I have read.

Test Post

I feel like I have been launched into a whole new world. I have a strong urge to try to keep up with technology even though my natural aptitude is not so strong. However the efforts will be worth it so as to keep up with the younger generation i.e. my children and grandchildren. Knowing some of the latest communication techniques will keep me connected to the current ways of the world. Learning all these new technical strategies is also a way of keeping my mind active and sharp(er). I find keeping up with things very difficult as everything moves so fast and changes quickly. I no sooner get used to a way doing things and it all changes again. Now I am faced with a new way of socializing. Some of it concerns me because I hope society will not lose the benefits of real social interaction and satisfy itself with typed messages, taped voices, and digital photos.
